AC relays are electromechanical switching relays for alternating current (AC) applications, controlling circuits with 24V to 480V AC coils. They have laminated iron cores to minimize eddy current losses, while including arc chutes to limit electromagnetic interference sparking when switching inductive loads such as motors. Contact ratings for AC relays are up to 50A, and their continuity with IEC 60947-5-1 requirements for dielectric strength of 2.5kV isolation is achieved without difficulty. These relays have widespread application in HVAC systems, lighting, and industrial motor controllers.
