Streetlights use photoelectric cell sensors to gauge the intensity of light using cadmium sulfide (CdS) or silicon photodiodes and control the circuits. These devices are widely used in automatic lighting systems such as security lamps which switch on at dusk and off at dawn. Additionally, in scientific instruments, light transmission is monitored in spectrophotometers or colorimeters where an analog output is provided proportional to the incident light. Its simplicity and low cost makes it ideal for primary applications requiring light detection.
